Editorial: Her First Love – A Photo Story

May 1, 2012

From the time I was a little girl, I dreamed about falling in love. I wondered what it would be like to be “the girl in the white dress,” wished for a boy to give me roses and hold my hand. My smallest crush daydreamed its way to the altar, every time.

But when I did really fall in love, my heart got quite broken, and it’s been a long, exquisite recovery. I’m only beginning to find again the sweetness of my girlhood romantic dreams as I’ve come back to life. This shoot was a deeply personal journey for me, right down to Paris, Catherine’s red hair, and Daniel’s roses behind his back.

There are few things in the world more beautiful than a boy and a girl in love for the first time, the wonder of a man’s way with a maid. This February shoot restored some of my own wonder, right down to the sweet awkwardness of my models (actors, actually!) who were just good friends and not really in love at all. I can’t thank these two enough for helping me tell my story.

Editorial: The White Dress from Ireland

April 24, 2012

I think it’s important for photographers to show the same care for themselves in their own photos that they would show for their clients. Even though I’m already married, I still have a bit of The Girl in me, planning a re-wedding, dying over white dresses – looking for beautiful. So for my first post-Ireland work project, I took some of the inspiration I gained in Ireland, the dress my husband bought for me – er, him, and that inner Girl, and I treated myself to a real Kelly Sauer shoot.

It’s hard to define the value in having pictures that tell who you are, and how really beautiful you are. I’m not just a photographer. I’m a person who sees, looking for the soul of every bride, finding the essence of the love between my couples, discovering the same beauty there I hope others might see in me.

Published: Bruce & Rachel

March 30, 2012

A few months ago, I designed and shot my first editorial session with Bruce and Rachel, friends from NOVA who had moved down to Charleston. We had so much fun, and I was determined to see them published somewhere – because they were just too cool not to share! Our session is finally live at A Lowcountry Wedding, and I couldn’t be more pleased!

Preview: Her First Love

February 4, 2012

I spent my Saturday morning fighting gnats, waiting for sunlight, and photographing pretty. The sweet fun we had at this “First Love” editorial shoot gave me some of the best shots I have ever captured. I cannot wait for the full reveal!

Headshots: Meet Kelly Sauer

January 14, 2012

I hit a sweet spot with the light yesterday when I hired myself to create some new headshots. I included some of the mirror framing and followed it all up with some different processing, and voila – some of my favorite images ever. (In spite of the fact that they are self-portraits. You have to forgive that part, k?)

Mood Board: The Light Hydrangea

December 13, 2011

My favorite flower used to be lilacs, but as I’ve grown up and grown allergies, I’ve had to look at other flowers to love. You’ll probably guess that I’ve settled rather obviously on lavender and hydrangeas. And peonies – they’re making a strong case for a new favorite too. Okay, so I like flowers. And I love the way the multifaceted petals in lilacs and hydrangeas make complete magic with the light, which is something else I love. I’m getting lost in here. It’s a good thing.

My settings for these next few were a little different – I completely love the way they came out – utterly classic, almost painted.

Editorial: We [Heart] Southern Weddings

October 26, 2011

There’s a huge photo contest at Southern Weddings to capture their new magazine cover, and since I love Southern Weddings, love taking pictures, and had a good idea, well…

Piper (my four-year-old) and I joined forces to style this little Southern Weddings Magazine shoot. She insisted that we have an “I Love You” card, and I insisted that she wear my wedding dress for the shoot. She wanted Bredon (aka. “Squiggy”) to be part of the session, and Bredon loves getting dressed up for things. And he doesn’t mind wearing a hat or two when his mama is getting all gooey over him. I added my grandmother’s blue plaid tablecloth and some favorite lace, and Pip contributed her desk and chair for a little tea table. Her hat was an Old Navy find for a free photo session we never managed to get shot, and Bredon’s hats were from… well, I can’t tell you yet. *grin*

I made a list of about eight shots that I definitely wanted. I got about six of those, and then Piper brought her own sense of herself to the thing, Bredon broke the teacup you see here, and well, here is what we made, our fine art out of a grumpy “are we done yet?” sort of real…

Editorial: Southern Autumn & Charm, Part II

September 25, 2011

This is the second part of my Southern Autumn & Charm shoot, when I got to really get down with Bruce and Rachel and enjoy the way they love each other. We did this shoot as a gift for their second anniversary, and I have to say – I loved them in love. They weren’t just boyfriend and girlfriend, they were all out married, and unafraid to act like it. I’m six years married, and they had me blushing at the beautiful intimacy they shared!

We had live oaks, a dock, a river, a red umbrella, and a joggling board (classic, CLASSIC Low Country!) – and once Rachel put that hat on and started sashaying for my camera, the REAL shoot was on. I didn’t stop until I had to, when we ran out of light as the mother of all thunderstorms rolled in.

Editorial: Southern Autumn & Charm, Part I

September 25, 2011

My friend Rachel came over to help out with my kids when I started my treatment this summer, and while I was stuck on the couch with my laptop, we hatched a plan to put together a full styled shoot. I’d been wanting to do photos for her since she and her husband, Bruce, were married two years ago. I attended that wedding seven months pregnant.

We finally nailed down a date for the shoot – less than a week out. There wasn’t really time to round up vendors, so we made a DIY backyard wedding. We wanted a charming, casual sort of story, so we created a tiny reception in Bruce’s back yard, followed by a bride/groom picnic at the dock down by the river behind his home. I designed and created the jewelry and florals, and Rachel provided food.

Mood Board: Winter Wedding Dress

July 11, 2011

The thing I love about shooting my mood boards is that I can pick whatever colors/season I want and put it together under my camera to express just what I am feeling in a given mood. This one is the product of my love affair with blue and brown. The combination picks up my favorite winter colors, and since we’ve already established that I’m suffering from a “Christmas In July” syndrome lately, I figured I would just put out all my cool-weather ideas to do battle with the unrelenting heat here.

Earlier this year, I pulled out one of my three wedding dresses (I know, I do owe you the story on that – maybe soon!), a simple silver necklace, and a pair of earrings to style a shoot for a quick-ish winter wedding mood board, and I’m happily reposting these photos here today while the crape myrtle I shot then explodes into some irreverent summer pink (which, I know, I will most likely be photographing and sharing at some point soon…).

Colors: winter white, pearl, iced blue, crape myrtle
Theme: winter wedding details
